6:30 - Wake-up
6:45 - Change diaper (not mine)/prepare milk & blueberries
7:20 - Arrive at school
8:00 - Homeroom
8:10 - 9:40 - English 6
9:50 -11:20 - Grading & prepping (yes, a long free period but this is usually spent getting the rest of the job done)
11:20 - 12:05 - working lunch - rehearsal with Warriors from A Midsummer Night's Dream
12:05 - 12:55 - study hall with squirrely 8th Graders who are all in love
1:00 - 1:50 - English 6
1:55 - 2:45 - Grading & prepping
2:45 - 3:15 - Academic Assistance (help students who have questions)
3:15 - 4:30 - Rehearsal with special talents people who perform between acts
6:30 - 9:30 - Baseball Game (I'm the pitching coach; we lost 5-2)

Today - I feel like crap. I'm rundown and have a sore throat. The only bright spot, Spring Break starts Friday!!!!

  1. Did I just total two hours and twenty minutes of prep time?

Note to self: either move to California or transfer to a middle school.

On the other hand, you're doing way more volunteer work that I am.

  2. Our school runs on this strange six day rotation. For example, today, Thursday, was Day 4, tomorrow will be Day 5, etc... My schedule is different all six days, some days heavy on classes, others lighter. Also I taught creative writing in the fall, which was only a one semester class, then it dropped from my schedule. There are days you really look forward to and days you kind of look forward to and days you dread. I will admit, my schedule is nice this semester.

The baseball thing I get paid for, but the hours I spend doing it far outweigh the compensation. Two and a half hour practices every day after school on top of 20 games and playoffs.

The Midsummer play is part of the 6th Grade English program. Takes 3 months of rehearsal during our lunch breaks every day, which is hell! Good news, we're doing away with it... and I'm probably not coaching baseball next year.

  3. Our kids are just finishing up Spring Break...they are dreading waking up early. My 7th grader and preschooler start school at 8 (pre-k only two days/wk), but my other two elementary age don't start until 8:50 (and still we're running to get out on time).

  4. We also have the six day rotation. Ours is more balanced though--45 minute special every day, plus a half-hour recess.

All in all, it's not too bad. At least the planning time comes in big chunks.

  5. Hope you're feeling better. I have to admit; just reading this made me feel tired.
