Last year was my first time attending this conference and it was worth the time (four days) and money ($500). I mean, at least you get free coffee and breakfast treats every morning. They should pass out jackets at the door since the temperature in the banquet hall, the conference epicenter, hovers slightly above freezing.

I have been to an Illinois SCBWI conference, but never the LA or NY one. I have to go one day! (But not this year. Full moon sometime around that week which is prime musky fishing time so we are vacationing at my dad's cabin that week. One of the many reasons I married my husband was because he fished -so he could fish with my dad. And now they do. A lot.).
ReplyDeleteAre you going again this year?
You know what, Kelly, as fun as the conference is I'd probably trade my trip this year for a chance to go musky fishing. I've caught a few Northern Pike in my younger days, but I've always wanted to catch a Musky.
ReplyDeleteKelly - Yes, I am going again this year. I'm subbing for a manuscript critique too. It's only the first 15 pages but at least you get to sit down with someone who has been successful in this business.
ReplyDeleteChris - I've always wanted to fly fishing. What is musky fishing?
I've never been to the LA conference but have attended the one in NYC. Maybe someday I'll get out to LA. that's pretty good, and great speakers. If I ever get out to LA, I'll remember to take a sweater.
ReplyDeleteWell, Tracy, Musky fishing refers to the act of or intent to specifically capture muskellunge (Esox masquinongy)fish, a memeber of the pike family and perhaps the largest and most viscious common North American frshwater fish, via standard rod and reel.
ReplyDeleteYou want to talk cold conference? Yesterday, it was so warm, Boy and I had a picnic. This morning, I woke to snow, snow, snow. I was supposed to moderate a Read & Critique at a conference here (or so I was told in a confirmation email). My babysitter couldn't make it in the snow and though I have a teen who could sit, I was nervous about the driving conditions myself. Husband, who was on his way to Mi-effing-ami at the time, said, "Oh you can make it." So I attempt to leave and am stuck exactly two feet out the driveway. I used cat litter to get some traction and now there is cat litter everywhere. So I go inside and sulk. Eventually, the sun comes out and melts the heck out of everything (always wear sunscreen in CO) and so I tell the kids, "I'm going for it." I hop in the van, get to the conference, and the sign-in people say, "Hmmm, we have no record that you're moderating." But they had my name tag, so I went in for awhile. I'm going in tomorrow, too. I hope the weather's better.
ReplyDeleteAnita, can I copy and paste your comment into a post? That was priceless.
ReplyDeleteHi Tracy!
ReplyDeleteLA also isn't my type of place, but this NYer can't stay away from the lack of snow.
And my boyfriend refuses to leave (have you noticed how the natives are hellbent on staying in Cali?)
I'm trying to decide whether to cough up the fund to go to the SCBWI conference this year...
