Spring Break. Ah. Yes. Week two, nonetheless. My feet are currently up, in a resting position, affixed to something soft, as is my butt.
Here are a couple things happening at... my blog. I was going to use my blog's name, but then I realized my blog doesn't have a name. It used to be Crossing Chalk, named after my first MG novel, which everyone in the Milky Way (and other galaxies) passed on. No biggie though, novel number two is getting much better (dare I say enthusiastic) responses from readers.

So here's what's to look forward to on... my blog.
- Twitter: how 140 characters from 140 characters can keep you informed. (follow me)
- Review of Okay for Now, by Gary Schmid (my literary hero)
- Review of The Fourth Stall, by Chris Rylander
(as part of his official blog tour)
- How to Relax without doing anything (I know, that makes no sense)
- Unleashed: Sixth Grade Bird Nerd Projects (think Birder meets Restaurateur)
- The Trojan War
and how it makes sixth grade boys want to sword fight (during class)
Well, that's about it. If any of those topics interest you, then stick around for more reading (that makes you smarter by the post) from... my blog.
As another literary hero of mine (Avi) says: we writers write reading, not writing.

Spelling Lesson of the Day:
Word: ACHILLES
Sixth Grade Versions:
- Akilles
- Achealeez
- Akeeleas
- Achielize
- Achilleeze
The word I'm most scared to hear Sixth Graders say: TELEMACHUS
So... how do YOU pronounce TELEMACHUS?
Okay, I'll give it a go:
ReplyDeletetel-UH-mack-us
But other fun pronunciations could be telly-make-us; tel-eh-may-chus; and tele-WHAT?-chus. Tee-leh-make-use is interesting too. Though it doesn't come as trippingly off the keyboard.
And I fully enjoy...your blog. =)
How is telemachus pronounced? I'm assuming the ch makes a k sound...
ReplyDeleteI really, really need to read The Fourth Stall!
My blog is my name too. I find it easier to find people on my blogger dashboard if their blog is their name. ENjoy spring break!
Jenny - I dig your blog too. In fact, I'm going to link to it. That's how much I dig it.
ReplyDeleteKelly - Basically you say Telemachus really fast.
tuh-LEM-uh-kuhs (I stole that from Dictionary.com)
Happy Spring Holiday Break :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm changing my blog to something more eponymous (I'm not sure I am using that word correctly). But it always takes me a long time to finally do what I decide to do, so don't count on it happening any time soon.
ReplyDeleteI will read.
T.H.W. - it took me longer to type your screen name initials than to type it out. Now I'm writing about it. Sheesh. Waste of time. Yes, a holiday, spring, late winter, midterm, Easter break.
ReplyDeleteTina - I have it! Tina Laurel Lee or Taste Lunch Later or TLL. That was random, I know. Stick with your name. It rolls off the tongue.
Happy Spring Break! Gary Schmidt is also my hero and I'll be keeping an eye out for your review. I read in Kirkus that it was his best work yet!
ReplyDeleteand, good for writing forward. it was my third completed novel that sold. i wrote it while querying the second and amassing rejections by the pound (first novel still sits in drawer never to see light again). Whenever people ask for any advice, I always tell them this part of my journey and say "write forward!".
okay. no one has actually asked me for advice but IF they ever do, I'm ready.
You could refer to your blog as Tracy Edward Wymer and people would think you were talking about yourself in third person. Could be fun.
ReplyDeleteTess - I would say this novel falls third, with Lizzie Bright and The Wednesday Wars ahead of it. Sometimes I feel like there's too much going on in his stories and not enough room for growth and exploration. Also, the first person narration here is similar to the MC in The Wednesday Wars. But this character's outlook is much more pessimistic. Who am I to talk? I just wrote a book with a pessimistic seventh grader as the MC.
ReplyDeleteMG - That reminds me of Rickey Henderson, a baseball player (hall of famer) who always spoke in third person. He was a few colors short of a full crayon box.
You are awesomeness personified. =)
ReplyDeleteI'm also totally jealous of your two week Spring Break--my husband gets that next year. The one week thing goes really fast if you're trying to get anything fun accomplished. (For fun this time, we tiled the bathroom. It's not as fun as it sounds.)
Jenny: thanks. blushing. wait, guys don't blush. my face is turning red. how's that? if you didn't notice, i'm boycotting capital letters today.
ReplyDeleteI'm excited about the Bird Nerd projects! We have nine million birds in our yard including some woodpeckers who like to wake us up early on the weekends. Let me know how the tweeting goes.
ReplyDeleteAnita: Bird Projects are pretty fun. We do an entire research unit on birds. I hated it at first. Now I really enjoy it. So much that I wrote a book about a bird nerd.
ReplyDeleteI recently came across your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I don’t know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog, I will keep visiting this blog very often.
ReplyDeleteWow, very nice post! Welcome here phdworks.org!
ReplyDeleteDo you mean the son of Odysseus and Penelope, who helped his father slay his mother's suitors. I spell it (tɪˈlɛməkəs)
